Stuart Bell fears the mold infestation in his building specifically where the General Services Administration is leasing.  The owner said that it will cost millions of dollars for mold removal and remediation.

The overflowing of the Susquehanna River caused the flooding that penetrated the building. The estimated cost for the remediation is $10 million.

The General Services of Administration (GSA) houses the records for the Social Security Administration (SSA). The flood damaged a large number of the records. The SSA-leased space worried the owner because the space wasn’t cleaned up immediately and now, toxic mold is everywhere in there!

Bell don’t want his building to be terribly infested with mold. He is constantly blaming the SSA about the infestation. “From day one, all of the experts have expressed the need for urgency in getting into the facility to start the cleanup before mold started to grow and the environment becomes toxic.” Bell said.

PLAINS TWP. – The owner of a Plains Township building is concerned that delays in getting a federally leased section of the structure cleaned out has caused it to become “toxic.”

 

Stuart Bell is president of Luzerne Products, and the Bell family owns the building. He said the delay in getting that section of the 230,300-square-foot building cleaned out has caused serious problems. Specifically, Bell said mold has formed in the space leased to the General Services Administration and it will take millions of dollars to remediate it. GSA leases 130,000 square feet of the building to store records for the Social Security Administration, Bell said.

Bell said it was GSA and SSA that caused the delay, citing security concerns.

Workers wearing protective suits were busy Friday cleaning out a section of the flood-damaged building.

The water-damaged records were still in the building, while other items were being carried out and sprayed by workers from Royal Plus Disaster Kleenup Inc. based in Maryland.

Remove mildew as soon as you see it: not only is it gross, the longer the mold is allowed to grow, the more damage it can do to surfaces and even your health.

To complete this How-To you will need:

Rubber gloves
A spray bottle
A bottle of liquid chlorine bleach
A plastic-bristled scrub brush
Some water
A clean, dry cloth

Step 1: Put on gloves

Put your gloves on.

Step 2: Mix bleach and water

Mix 1 part bleach to 15 parts water in the spray bottle.

Warning: Never mix bleach with anything other than water, and make sure your bathroom is well ventilated.

Step 3: Spray on mildew

Spray your bleach solution directly on any mildew stains.

Step 4: Let sit

Let the bleach sit for at least five minutes.

Tip: If there’s any mildew on fabric, like a shower curtain or towels, take it outside and brush it off. Then launder the item, using color-safe bleach if possible, and dry it in the sun.

Step 5: Rinse with water

Scrub the stained areas with a brush and then rinse with water. Use an old toothbrush on small areas like grout.

Tip: Mildew grows in dampness, and cool air holds less moisture than warm air, so running an air conditioner or dehumidifier can help prevent mold and mildew in the first place.

Step 6: Wipe dry

Wipe the treated areas dry with a cloth. This mildew may be gone, but leaving anything damp will just encourage a new batch to sprout.
